The Song You've Been Requesting...

As a companion post to the one directly below, and to honor the request of many (well 2 of you anyway) may I present the song which shall be played at my funeral. It is as I say, an Irish classic!

Mistress Murphy gave a party
Just about a week ago,
Everything was plentiful,
The Murphys, they're not slow.
They treated us like gentlemen;
We tried to act the same
And only for what happened,
Well it was an awful shame.
When Mrs. Murphy dished the chowder out
She fainted on the spot;
She found a pair of overalls
At the bottom of the pot.
Tim Nolan he got ripping mad,
His eyes were bulging out,
He jumped upon the piano
And loudly he did shout.
"Who threw the overalls in Mistress Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke so he shouted all the louder.
It's an Irish trick that's true, but I can lick the Mick that threw
The overalls in Mistress Murphy's chowder.
They dragged the pants from out the soup
And laid them on the floor;
Each man swore upon his life,
He'd ne'er seen them before.
They were plastered up with mortar
And were worn out at the knee,
They had their many ups and downs
As we could plainly see.
And when Mrs. Murphy she came-to
She 'gan to cry and pout,
She had them in the wash that day
And forgot to take them out.
Tim Nolan, he excused himself
For what he said that night,
So we put music to the words
And sang with all our might.
"Who threw the overalls in Mistress Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke so he shouted all the louder.
It's an Irish trick that's true, but I can lick the Mick that threw
The overalls in Mistress Murphy's chowderrrrrrr.

Good one Gypsy!
Are you really going to have this song played at your funeral?
My mom wanted Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend" played at her funeral but my stepfather nixed that idea.
We did play it in the limo after the funeral...
Sorry to be serious.
:(
I think I want John Lennon's Instant Karma played at my funeral...
"we all shine on, like the moon, the stars and the sun."
:)

Cool tune or should I say lyrics. I don't know the tune, but of course I composed one in my head as I read. I wonder how close they actually are? Interesting, all these years I thought Phil Lynott was the only good song writer ever to come from Ireland. Don't get mad, I'm Irish so I can make that joke!

Also, I can't wait to hear you re-record this tune...Which section of THIS song will you be leaving out? LOL! :)

I hope you know I'm just messing with you Lace...unfortunatley you can't see the devilish smile on my face right now though. I loved the Behind Blue Eyes you did, but I couldn't resist.

Take care,
Rob

My young cousin up the block is learning the bagpipes from his Grandfather and it is so gorgeous to hear them 6 houses away playing Irish folk tunes in the middle of the evening, I really enjoy it. Makes me wish I was Irish!

Sue, noooo I was jus kiddin' I'm not sure which song I'd like to have played at my funeral... maybe On Eagles Wings? The chorus is:

And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.

Another possibility is In Good Hands by Carolyn Arends. That chorus is:

And though I have never seen him face to face
I can say this much I understand
I believe that he is holding me now
And so I know I am
In good hands
I'm in good hands

We'll save Who Threw the Overalls for the wake. Irish wakes are a blast. Should be interesting to the Protestants that will be coming. I'd love to see the look on their faces as the 2 cultures merge, but I'll be *elsewhere*.. :P

Cheryl, you're so welcome. I hope you are feeling much better! I love the pic on your profile, is that you as a lil one? It's adorable. And THANK YOU for the compliments. I've always love BBE and was thrilled to contribute it to CTA!

LOLOLO Rob LOLOLOL, begorah you be Idish as well?!? Come in me lad! Come in! Didja know that Roger performed Behind Blue Eyes wit the Chieftains? He did! Me cousin tol me, he did! But I nere heard the version so I don know if he cut anything out meself. I don't! And I KNOW you be kiddin' me! LOL Now click on the link and you'll hear the tune. The song is hilarious, my father sung it to us since we were kids. BTW he cannot carry a tune whatsoever which made it all the funnier. We featured it at my parents 50th wedding anniversary this year. Thankfully he was too busy to sing along.

Grace, I'll be over to see your song pronto!!

Lin, there is nothing like an Irish heritage. I think the Irish can take any frown and turn it upsidedown. I love Celtic music, and so envy you sitting on the porch listening to the pipes on a breezy summer evening. Perhaps I should blog about the medieval Irish dinner dance we used to attend years ago.

Me say:

Of course I knew that Lace:) I have the CD and the video and it. It is great. I think I wrote about it the other day on TOWHM blog. Come to think of it, the CD is on top of my printer right in front of my mug. It is called "Roger Daltrey A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who" performed with the Juilliard Orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen. It kicks ASS. You should buy it! Daltrey also recorded an entire album with the Chieftans I recall.

take care,
Rob

Actualy Lace, I'm only an 1/8 Irish. But just enough to give me clearance to make Irish jokes. You know stuff like:

Where does an Irish family go for vacation? To a different bar.

Or...Did you hear about the two gay Irishmen? Gerald Fitzpatrick and Patrick Fitzgerald. Might have to think about that one a bit.

Or...How do you tell the Irish guy in the hopsital ward? He's the one blowing the foam off his bedpan.

Actually, actually, I dont' own a Chieftain's album, they just happen to be on the Roger CD, which like I said is great.

Hope you didn't mind the bad jokes:)
