Book Tag Too

Went to Gypsy's blog and saw the book tag, guess I'll join the crew.

1. Find the nearest book: Romans, Vol 1

2. Name the author: Dr David Jeremiah

3. Turn to page 123. Go to the 5th sentence on the page and then copy the next 3 sentences on your blog: "Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law."

Thank you for saying hello and for saying as you did over to mine!

I so like how on p 123, sentece five begins with a question in Romans, Vol 1. It is not by what we do that we are lawful, I think it says. Interesting. Kind of makes sense seeing that as we treat others so often is not as we might be treated in return. Not to speak for everyone! ;-)

I love the orchid!

Hiya Gina,

Thanks for dropping by! Actually Romans Vol 1 is reiterating the heart of the (usually understood) gospel which is, *keeping the rules/the law does not save us; it is instead a matter of trust, of the heart*.

At first that seems especially and essentially stupid. If *being good/following the law* is not the criteria by which we are saved by God, then by what? Ephesians clarifies:

Ephesians 2: 8-10
8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Not to speak for everyone

Of course not! :P

I thought I was being too much of a smart ass and disrespectful (and I would never be that way to you!).

Well, I thought about it actually...other religions believe that you can become enlightened purely through devotion, so the idea of having faith only to be Saved makes perfect sense to me.

I just can't make up my mind about religion...I am just a big Problem Child who thinks WAY too much!
I am fascinated by all religions though.
I have such a hard time w/the Christian Right in this country and it has left a sour taste in my mouth...but when I pray, I do pray to Jesus.
Music is my religion, for now.
Take care my dear.
Love,
Suexxx
PS I was saying that I think LOVE is heaven and that a guilty conscience is hell! My warped/simplistic view maybe.
:)
Peace out sista!!

You know what's even funnier? My friend switched seats with me midway thru and got her phone number. She was hot but that was ridiculous. Thenk again, my friend had a tough time dating in high school (a white, snikky albino), so I guess this was an opportunity...?

I know that you silly, I didn't take you as smart a**ed to me at all. Actually I had started a response and saved it to Word but then got sidetracked with my MIL being in the hospital. Let me go find what I wrote and post it.

It's an amazing concept to be sure. I'll say for now, once I fuly understood it, it is also the most loving concept I have ever come across. I'll do my best to explain it from Christ's perspective when I come back.

I just can't make up my mind about religion...I am just a big Problem Child who thinks WAY too much! I am fascinated by all religions though.

I came out of organized religion (Catholicism) years ago and to be honest I'm not all that big into *religion* itself, because people get into it's mix and then screw things up. Some religions weren't even meant to be religions at their genesis, but rather philosophies than followers later made into religions. Some religions were meant to be religions but followers later warped them into legalistic societies. All of those not only drift away from the basic message of Jesus, but insert another message altogether and then claim it is the gospel truth! I do go to church, but always try to not lose sight of the fact that the church is not God.

I have such a hard time w/the Christian Right in this country and it has left a sour taste in my mouth...but when I pray, I do pray to Jesus.

Gah, some terrible things have been said and done in the *name of Christ* by Christians. Worst part is then Jesus gets the heat and blame for it!

Music is my religion, for now.

"A new religion that'll bring em to their knees"... ;)

PS I was saying that I think LOVE is heaven and that a guilty conscience is hell! My warped/simplistic view maybe.

::Chuckles:: I think you're right about both, and then some. More later!

::Hugs::

Sue,

I'm reposting the response I had started to your previous question. You had asked (in italics now)...

So I can be a selfish idiot and not say or do one kind deed and still get to heaven if I BELIEVE???

Oh gosh no, the bible itself points out that that the demons *believe*, but they are not saved:

James 2:19
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

Scripture has to be taken as a whole, and there are verses that clarify that you cannot do whatever you want and consider yourself *saved* just because you mumbled a *sinners prayer* or *claim* to believe. It says that salvation by grace is not a license to sin:

Romans 6: 15-16
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!

1 John 3:9
9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.

It also says that true faith produces unselfish acts of kindness; that without them claiming to have faith is just an empty claim:

James 2:14-17
14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

1 John 3:17-19
17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence

And finally while scripture says that we must believe to be saved:

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Our English translation does not capture the concept from the original Greek text. There you find that *believe* constitutes more than just buying into something. Rather it calls for a committment to following Christ. See:
http://www.bju.edu/bible/bible.php?b=john&c=3&v=16&d=3&w=16

So we see that belief is a matter of a conversion of the heart, accompanied by a commitment to Jesus and His teachings, and not just an intellectual assent. True faith is accompanied by good deeds. Those deeds however, cannot buy your way into heaven. I think I'll post something about/on Good Friday to better explain how the gospel really *is* good news.
